Don't cheat: You are taking a big step towards helping yourself, and substance abuse is a major self destructive behavior. The data suggest you have to stop smoking at least four weeks or longer before an operation to improve wound healing. Make sure on talk to the weight loss surgical team about your issues, and do whatever it takes to make it as safe as possible.

Be honest...: Your surgeon has requested you quit smoking to reduce the risk to you during the surgery. If you are smoking or doing any drugs that could impact the surgery, you need to be honest with your doctor. With honesty, it does not matter how long the metabolites can be detected in lab tests. I would advise taking responsibility for your choices/actions. if surgery is delayed it is for your own safety
