Typically scalp: cysts are also known as pilar cysts, and despite the name "cyst" they are actually made up of keratin (the stuff that hair is made of). The keratin is white and hardens when exposed to air. It fills a sac and when the sac is full it feels firm and hard.

Cysts in scalp: Sebaceous cysts are hard lumps. They are filled with keratin. Keratin is a thick greasy protein which hairs are made from and lubricates the top layer of our skin. These cysts are common and most often arise from infected hair follicles.

Think of car tires: Think of car or bike tires. They are filled with air, but are hard when inflated. The same principal applies to tissue filled to capacity with fluid.

Cyst: Not all cysts are made of fluids. Some cysts ( ESP the ones on scalp) are bony -- hence they are " bone hard"
