Would a mri of the mid back show a tumor if one wasn't seen on an abdominal ct scan?

Not likely: While MRI and CT scans take pictures in different ways, tumors that are not large enough to be seen on ct will likely not be seen on CT. One area of exception to this is disorders of the spine and nervous system where MRI can take a much more detailed picture of the area in question.
