Pregnancy : It is essential for pregnant women to take folic acid and iron supplements daily. Your OB doc will usually prescribe these. Folic acid prevents spina bifida, a failure of the spinal cord to fully develop. Iron prevents anemia as your blood volume increases in pregnancy. Eat a healthy balanced diet of protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Drink milk daily. Avoid tobacco and alcohol.
