What is microcytic anemia and how is it caused?

Several causes: Microcytic anemia means that the red blood cell count is low, and that the red blood cells are small. This is most common in iron deficiency anemia and in thalassemia (a hereditary form of anemia). It may also be seen in less common forms of anemia.
