Schizophrenia: Schizophrenia is a life long condition. If you have been asymptomatic for 8 years, either your schizophrenia is very well controlled or you were misdiagnosed. Slow taper of your meds, closely monitored by your psychiatrist , will likely give you the answer.

Depending.....: can be pretty common. If the schizophrenia symptoms were under a particular context (huge stress for example). Also, people with bipolar disorder frequently have psychosis that is very episodic. Without an actual examination, I cannot give specific medical advice on your particular situation.
