A dermoid is a cyst.: Dermoids are special kinds of cysts; they can contain a variety of tissues including hair and bone. Indeed, they are commonly removed, but timing of removal depends on the size and if it is causing you any symptoms. Whether or not the ovary is removed is related to how easy or difficult it is to separate the cyst from the ovary.
