Depends: Type II diabetes I presume you are talking about. To decrease the risk of getting it, you can maintain a healthy weight, exercise, and have your blood sugar checked yearly.

Higher risk: You are at a much higher risk of developing diabetes but there are things that you can do. Diabetes is largely a combination of genetics and lifestyle. The best way to decrease your risk is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Eat healthy to avoid excessive weight gain. maintain ideal weight for your height. Stay active, this helps balance your sugar and insulin levels.

Genetics are not all: you certainly have an increased risk. However, keeping weight down and even more importantly, regular exercise (current standards are 90 minutes of moderate exercise a week) lowers risk dramatically. The exercise lowers risk by about 50%. More fitness and staying thin lowers risk even more.
