Anxiety related: Xanax (alprazolam) is used to treat anxiety. Anxiety itself is the reason why you have chest pain and palpitations.

See your doctor: most common side effects from drugs such as xanax (alprazolam) are drowsiness, lightheadednesss, fatigue, irritability. Rarely it has been reported that this drug may cause palpitations. If you are experiencing such symptoms, it is recommended that you see the prescribing physician to discuss the possibility that these symptoms may be caused by xanax (alprazolam) and be prescribed other medications.

Not likely: Xanax (alprazolam) usually calms palpitations if they are coming from anxiety/stress. Are you taking any other meds that could interfere or interact with xanax (alprazolam)? I have heard of some rare cases of benzodiazepines causing heart rate to increase but this complaint is rare. Talk to your doctor or consider wearing a monitor for a couple days to see what your heart is actually doing.
