A member asked:

Pain in my calves not related to exercise, could it be related to my low vit d or high calcium?

Possibly: your high calcium, which may be real or an artifact with your Vitamin D therapy. See a physician for further testing of your hormones. You may get a test for your parathyroid gland, if there is not a medication based reason for your calcium levels.

Parathyroid?: Do you have a parathyroid disorder? Have you had these levels checked (PTH, ionized Ca and Vit D)? Does the pain get worse when you are walking and get better when you rest? Is the pain worse when you're sitting or trying to sleep at night? Any restlessness? The other options could be spinal stenosis or claudication, restless leg syndrome. Need to be seen, have bloodwork and exam!

Multiple causes: Calf pain can be related to strain and fatigue of these large, daily used muscles. Unexpected or trauma related swelling, redness, and pain can be concerning for blood clots. These muscles are prone to overuse depending on foot wear, walking patterns, or climbing. Calcium and vitamin D abnormalities can be largely asymptomatic but should be followed and adjusted appropriately any ways.

Depends: There are many things that can cause this. Are you on a statin for cholesterol? Have you been inactive leading to a clot? Are any of your calves swollen? You should maybe have someone see you because this can be a variety of things.

Probably not high Ca: Many possibilities including low magnesium, calcium, potassium, or sodium. Statins and untreated hypothyroidism also commonly cause muscle pain. Check with your doctor. Simple blood test.

Could be Vit D: Low vit D can definitely cause some muscle aches as well as weakness and fatigue. Doesn't always, but could. High calcium not so much, but low potassium or low magnesium can also cause similar symptoms. Don't recommend extra potassium but you could try magnesium supplement...and of course get your vit D to where it needs to be. Increasing exercise might help too. Hope this helps!
