Should work: Not everybody who gets the vaccine develops immunity to the Hepatitis B Virus, but that is rather uncommon. It is a series of 3 injections, be sure to get them all! Immunity develops over several months, it is not immediate. You can get a Hepatitis B Surface Antibody test to see if you do develop immunity. Sometimes, years later, immunity can wane and a booster may be needed.

Yes.: Yes, will decrease the risk of contacting the disease. Hep B vaccine is given in a series of 3 shots, 2nd and 3rd at 1 and respectively 6 month after the first one. Your immunity against hep B will build up with each shot.
