I'm taking 40 mg omeprazole every day for 24/7 gerd. my doctor is discouraging surgery. are there risks for taking omeprazole for years?

Not really: it can increase the risk for c. difficile infection and rarely reduce platelet counts. if you have long standing GERD you should see a gastroenterologist to consider an upper endoscopy--they can also check for h. pylori infection
