Best is prevention: The best medicine is to prevent getting the flu by being sure to get influenza vaccine yearly. Once you already have the flu, medication can help to make you more comfortable but won't necessarily cure the flu or make you get better any sooner. A recent study surprisingly suggests that even Tamiflu (oseltamivir) is not effective in treating influenza.

Not really better: "Sleepy" over-the counter medicine contains a sedating antihistamine, so it may be slightly more effective at drying up runny nose and might make it a little easier to fall asleep compared with daytime cold medicine. Sleep is very important for the body to heal properly. Over the counter medicine treats only symptoms to help you feel better, they do not shorten the disease course at all
