Abdominal pressure: All abdominal wall hernias are aggravated by factors that increase intra-abdominal pressure such as chronic constipation, chronic cough, or chronic straining with urination. They occur at points of weakness in the abdominal wall fascia. These points of weakness are most commonly congenital such as umbilical hernia but can be post surgical as well.

Umbilical hernia: In adults, if there is too much pressure on the abdominal wall, fatty tissue or a part of the bowel can poke through a weak part of the abdominal muscle, resulting in an umbilical hernia. Doing sit ups could certainly contribute to its development in someone with anatomical risks such as a weak area in the abdominal wall. Obesity, persistent cough, or heavy lifting can increase the risk.

Straining, lifting: Abdominal straining and heavy lifting over a prolonged period of time can contribute to the development of umbilical and other hernias. Some people have a weak abdominal wall at birth, which can cause an umbilical hernia. Obesity, multiple pregnancies, and previous surgeries can also lead to the development of an umbilical hernia.
