Knee popping: Knee popping may be normal, but if it is accompanied by worsening pain or swelling, there is a concern for a tear in the knee cartilage. Torn cartilage especially occurs when there is an impact on the knee during a twisting motion, e.g., when you make fast cuts while running during a football or basketball game. If you do not have pain or swelling, you can just watch this. If worse, see a Dr.

Hard to say but: It's possible that the popping and pain of your knee is related to damage of the cartilage in the knee joint or cartilage covering the bones forming the knee joints. I would encourage you to seek the input from at least your primary care doctor if not an orthopedic surgeon. Best of luck. In the meanwhile you may want to take it easy exercise wise. Best of luck.
