Painful swallowing: Painful swallowing can be due to: a viral or bacterial infection (like strep throat) causing swollen and painful tonsils; tumors (benign or malignant: more often in older patients with other risk factors like smoking, GERD/reflux disease); allergy; anaphylactic shock (very rare). Have your MD/PCP take a look to be sure it is not due to Strep.
