Excessive gas: This could be as a result of the food you eat ,enzyme deficiency or rapid eating and even smoking.Needless to say,there are multiple causes. Eat slowly,chew food thoroughly, avoid carbonated beverages,limit air swallowing,avoid smoking,limit dairy products,pre-soak beans prior to cooking and consuming and limit high fiber diet

Gut bacteria: Digestion problems after a recent illness may be due to alterations of the natural bacteria in the gut. This can occur due to antibiotics taken for an infection or the infection itself.
