Are tanning beds useful to help alleviate the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder?

Seasonal disorder: Light therapy is a way to treat seasonal affective disorder (sad) by exposure to artificial light. Seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression that occurs at a certain time each year, usually in the fall or winter. The light from a light box mimics outdoor light. This is thought to cause a chemical change in the brain that lifts your mood. This is not the same light as a tanning bed.

No: SAD is now referred to as Depressive Disorder with Seasonal Pattern in DSM 5. It is a subtype of depression. A tanning bed will not provide the same benefits as a light therapy box. Tanning beds are also dangerous to your health.
