Yes you can : Try some over the counter creams or suppositories , They may help decrease the swelling .Sitz baths will help with pain and decrease the size . Watch you diet and increase the amount of fiber you eat and water you drink . Constipation and hard stools will make matters worse .

Depends: It depends on the extent of the hemorrhoid and if it is thrombosed (clotted) or not. Without an exam I cannot give you a definitive answer. If the hemorrhoids are thrombosed they would be very painful. Being embarassed for certain exams is common. You should trust your doctor enough though that you can get over that feeling, We as doctors are here to help you the patient. Get checked please.
