See dermatologist: Molluscum contagiosum is caused by a virus. The best way to avoid spread is good hand hygiene (washing hands) and avoid touching infected area. Topical medications such as salicylic acid, podophyllin, tretinoin, cantharidin, and imiquimod may be helpful. Laser therapy and cryotherapy performed by dermatologist are also potential treatment options.
