Chronic cough: Common causes of a chronic cough (lasts for more than 2 or 3 months) are allergic rhinitis (allergies to pollen or other airborne irritants), acid reflux, asthma and/or smoking. A trial of over-the-counter antihistamines can help rule out allergies. Separate trial of antacids (NOT with antihistamines) can help show if acid reflux is a problem. Asthma has to be diagnosed by a doctor.
