Actually, not much: The heart actually sits directly behind the breast plate (sternum). The reason it feels like it's to the left side of the chest is because the heart is tethered in such a way that when it beats, it rotates a bit & strikes the chest wall just left of the breast bone. If one is thin-chested, this can be exaggerated, & more so when lying on one's left side (assuming heart is in the normal position)
