Dumb luck: The mutations that drive cancers are largely random. It's being worked out, but even the genetic syndromes that put people at risk for superficial spreaders such as CDKN2A also produce nodulars. Basically they're the same illness except that the nodulars got good at breaking through the basement membrane earlier than the superficial spreaders. Hoping you have an early lesion and surgical cure.
