Mutations: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3253944/ Histologically, genomically distinct biological subtypes https://www.melanoma.org/understand-melanoma/what-is-melanoma/cutaneous-melanoma Age, race, genetic make-up, intermittent sun exposure all play a part. These two subtypes have different ratios and prevalence of certain mutations like BRAF and NRAS. SSM often begins from dysplastic nevi.
