Viral infection: If this is a viral gastroenteritis or intestinal grippe,it should resolve after several days without specific treatment. Avoid harsh roughage and try a bland diet. Get examined again if abdominal discomfort persists or worsens, or if there is associated tenderness, vomiting, fever, black or bloody stools.Peptobismol May help but can cause the stools to be black.

Simethicone: With infections of the gastrointestinal tract, excessive gas can cause cramping. Simethicone (Gas-X, etc.) can be very helpful. Till better, avoid too much fiber, foods like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, caffeine. High pectin fruits & juices may also be too much till you are better. Avoid Splenda & sorbitol (artificial sweetener types): they can cause serious gastrointestinal effects, esp.now.
