Edema: Possibly you are retaining fluid. Fluid retention can be caused by several different things from poor circulation, venous insufficiency, thrombophlebitis, dvt's, chf, being overweight and on your feet all day-especially in the heat and humidity, pregnancy, previous surgery (especially involving lymph nodes), certain medications, etc. See the Dr. for eval if persists. Best wishes to you.

Gravity vs Retention: The 2 most common reasons for painless swollen ankles are water retention (with a variety of causes including medications, menses, and especially SALT intake) and gravity working against your lower leg veins trying to push the blood back to the heart. Be aware of salt everywhere in your diet, and never stop using your calf muscles or tapping your feet to keep those extra fluids moving. Good luck.

Many causes: There are many causes of ankle swelling. In warm weather we tend to swell more than in cooler weather. Eating too much salt can also cause ankle swelling. More serious causes would be elevated blood pressure, kidney problems and heart problems. I would suggest that you see a health care practitioner for an exam and some routine blood tests to try and determine the cause. Low salt diet is best.

Various reasons : This may be just a normal physiologic process that occurs in some people depending on body habitus, amount of physical activity, diet, type of work , medications and so forth . On the other hand there are other conditions that can cause this such as congestive heart failure, renal failure , peripheral vascular disease and others .
