4 days ago my hand was in the way of a car door being shut and it's still swollen and discolored. is it possible it's broken?

Possible fracture: Yes, it is possible that the hand can be broken. X-rays would help determine that. If the x-rays are normal and the pain persists for more than 2 weeks, it is still possible that there is a fracture. More imaging (MRI or CT) would help at that point in time.
