Edema: Gums that have subgingival tartar and/or are not getting enough stimulation - such as a tooth brush massage the gum- regularly. Will have the gums swell and bleed easily. the color is from the increase in non oxygenated blood. See you dentist. Often is resolved with a thorough cleaning

Periodontist: Sometimes there is good reason to see a specialist rather than a generalist. Your scenario indicates evaluation by a gum/bone specialist is in order. Do you have bleeding elsewhere? Do you bruise easily? How long has it been since your last professional cleaning? What are your pocket depths? Are gums swollen? See a Periodontist.
