A member asked:

Can you get strep throat while on antibiotics?

Depends: There are a few antibiotics that would not kill strep if you were on them for another reason, like a UTI. (Macrodantin) But most broad range antibiotics and all in the penicillin group would kill strep before it set in. Most who get a sore throat on antibiotics are dealing with a virus.

Yes: Hannah, Not all antibiotics treat strep. Depending which antibiotic you are on, you could definitely get strep while on antibiotics. If you feel that you have strep, visit your doctor. Hope this helps!

Yes: Only certain antibiotics are effective in killing Streptococcus pyogenes which causes strep throat. If you were taking one of these other antibiotics, you could get strep throat and the infection would not be stopped
