MD vs. NP: Neonatologists are medical doctors specialized in pediatrics and then subspecialized in neonatology. A nurse practitioner is an rn who has done graduate work in nursing practice and specialized in neonatology.

A specialized nurse: A neonatal nurse practitioner is a nurse who has received specialized advance practice nursing in neonatal intensive care. Many have a masters degree in nursing, other do not. In most every state they must work under guidelines provided by a neonatologist.
