No maximum: There is no maximum number of years. Often tolerance will develope over time which may require a change to a different drug or an increased dose.

Forever: Although chronic opiod ingestion can cause hormonal abnormalites and depression, so can chronic pain. The morphine itself has no long term adverse effects on any organ system other than endocrine effects. Constipation is the only GI effect that is pretty consistent. I have patients that have been on morphine for 15 years without any consequences other than above which are treatable.
