Uric acid in a joint: Gout is a chronic disease caused by deposition of uric acid crystals in the joints. This deposition causes acute episodes of joint swelling, redness, and pain, which can last for several days before it resolves on its own. Gout usually affects the great toe, but if left untreated, can affect other joints in the body.
