How will having a pulmonary embolism affect my baby?

Dr. Dennis Higginbotham

No direct effect.: Pulmonary embolism (pe) is a potentially life threatening event that can occur as a result of a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and DVT risk is increased by a factor of about 30 during pregnancy. Having a pe would not have a direct effect on your fetus, but fetal survival is dependent on maternal survival. Having a DVT and/or a pe will require anticoagulation, which can be done safely during pregnancy.

Elevate & compress: The best self treatment would be to elevate your feet (above your heart) when sitting & elevate the foot of the bed while sleeping. Also compression stockings should be applied every morning before getting out of bed.

I agree with the above with the caveat this is discussed with your Internist or specialist as while attempting to remove the swelling from the foot you would not want to overload the heart or lungs.

Dr. William Walsh

Vasospasm, directly: Cocaine usually leads to problems via vasospasm and severe high blood pressure leading to death of part of the heart. Smoked Cocaine can lead to direct lung injury itself (so called crack lung) and death.
