A 37-year-old member asked:
The lens on my glasses are thick due to poor eyesight. Is a thinner lens made that is just as powerful?
2 doctor answers • 8 doctors weighed in

Dr. Andrew Shatz answered
Ophthalmology 26 years experience
Yes: Lenses can be made from glass or plastics. Glass is traditionally heavier than plastics, but there are also differences in the plastic lenses. Ask your eye doctor whether they can make your lenses from higher index of refraction materials, but understand that if your prescription is very high there will still be a need for thick lenses. Consider contacts as an option for better eyesight.

A 19-year-old member asked:
I am myopic & I use glasses of no. 2.0 but II don't wear them all the time, only during lectures.Wil it weaken my eyesight more?

Dr. Andrew Shatz answered
Ophthalmology 26 years experience
Not at all: Contrary to popular belief, glasses do not weaken the eyes; all they do is improve the vision one has by providing the focus that the eyes are missing. The eyes can naturally become more nearsighted or farsighted over time, and glasses simply help to correct the vision that you have.

A 37-year-old member asked:
Is it possible for people with bad eyesight get by with just contacts and no glasses?
1 doctor answer • 1 doctor weighed in

Dr. Ilan Cohen answered
Ophthalmology 25 years experience
Yes but not ideal: As long as you clean your contact lenses well and use and replace them as directed, most people can wear them everyday. However, having a pair of glasses is important in case you do have a problem with your eyes or your lenses which means you cannot wear them temporarily.
