OK: CMV is a common infection in people who have HIV. BUT having CMV does not mean you have HIV. In people who don't have HIV, CMV is a common usually harmless infection. Most people don't experience any symptoms but for the immunosuppressed and fetuses it can cause serious problems. There is no cure although antivirals can be used and there is no vaccine.

Wrong way around: Almost everyone will have CMV in their lifetime as a quiet, unrecognized infection. It is worrisome if passed to a fetus because it can make them deaf. For most at other times it is minor. It is from a family of DNA viruses well known for hibernating in the human body after its primary infection. Those few that acquire HIV & have their immune system weaken will often see CMV reactivate.
