What do you suggest if my friend's mother has to have surgery due to a pleat in the eye, does anyone know exactly what that is?

Epiretinal membrane: There really is no such thing as a "pleat" in the eye. Perhaps you are referring to a macular pucker also known as an epiretinal membrane or surface wrinkling retinopathy. This is removed by a retina specialist combined with a vitrectomy by peeling the membrane off the retina.
