What happens if you discover that the infection is viral can you stop taking the penicillin before the 10 days have passed?

Nothing happens: If the infection for sure is due to a virus, stopping penicillin or other antibiotics won't be a problem, and of course would reduce the possibility of side effects from the antibiotic. But check first with the doctor who prescribed it, to be sure it's a virus without a superimposed bacterial infection.
