Sx and physical exam: Symptoms: localized pain in groin, often increased with coughing or sneezing, a lump may pop out at times, especially with a cough. If pain persists, or lump/swelling persists and can't be gently massaged back into abdominal cavity, it may be strangulating and compromising blood supply= emergency. An exam by doc should make the diagnosis. If primary care doc is unsure, get surgical opinion.

Physical exam: It is a practiced skill that can be difficult to master. Obvious hernias are easy to see and feel by most.
