Depends on cause: Emphysema is a vacant hole in your lungs most commonly due to smoking. There are some genetic disorders such as alpha one anti trypsin that can cause it (more likely at your age) and when the burst your lungs collapse which is a pneumothorax (air outside your lungs but up in your chest cavity) can be life threatening and needs immediate treatment.
