A member asked:

when will my baby be able to handle large pieces of food?

Depends: Most infants can start to tolerate more solid foods (such as bits of pasta) around 9 months of age. This often occurs around the same age the baby develops a good pincer grasp. However, some babies have problems which delay the timing (eg. Reflux, feeding aversion or gagging). Also many premature babies need extra time to develop this skills. It is best to consult your doctor on the right timing.

As late as...: ...Possible. Fatal choking can occur at any age, but is most common below 3.
Dr. Mark Diamond

Probably Not: Babies and toddlers up to the age of 2-3years old are at much highr risk of choking, so that care must be taken with large chunks of food.Think of a cheerio, which if put in the baby's mouth and not chewed is small enough to not block the windpipe and will dissolve. This should serve as the model for feeding table foods to the baby.
Dr. Robert Kwok

In a few years: Babies and toddlers choke on large pieces of food. They can even choke on small pieces of food. This is why baby foods are mashed up or pureed. Toddler foods are soft so that they break up easily when a toddler presses the food with his tongue or gums.

Could my baby constipated?

4 doctor answers6 doctors weighed in
Dr. Pamela Lindor
Pediatrics 32 years experience
Yes: Babies who are passing hard, formed stools and seem to have pain with stools may be constipated. Frequency of bowel movements is usually not important, if the stool is soft and the baby has no pain or straining. See your pediatrician if you suspect your baby has pain with bowel movements or if you see blood in the stool.
A member asked:

Should I wake my baby up to feed?

4 doctor answers8 doctors weighed in
Dr. Thad Woodard
Specializes in Pediatrics
No: Infants have variable feeding patterns/timing and if they are gaining weight appropriately they can be allowed to feed on their pattern, unless it is too frequent. In general an average of every 3-4 hours is typical. In addition waking a baby to eat is easy but keeping them awake when they want to sleep is more difficult.

Use Nursery water: Nursery water is distilled water that is also fortified with a small amount of Fluoride (you can also get Fluoride free variety). This water is purified for drinking by babies and does not contain harmful bacteria, parasites, or heavy metals that can be found in city/tap or well water. Should be used until age 12 months.

Exposure: Waiting simply allows them further exposure to the diseases. And having a current epidemic of whooping cough(pertussis) where i practice, your child has an increased risk of serious disease and even death by waiting. And the shots are a much safer risk than taking a chance on getting the disease!
A 31-year-old member asked:

If I shave my babys lanugo, will it grow back even faster?

Dr. Jerry Casale
Pediatrics 38 years experience
Don't do it: Shaving hair, any kind does not make it grow back faster, this is indeed an old wives tale. But please do not touch the lanugo it will go away and would be afraid of any potential harm to shaving a baby.U only have lanugo once. Embrace it.
