Psoriasis?: The knee-jerk reaction to brittle toenails is fungus infection, but that would be very unusual in a 17-year-old. Since fingernails are also involved, psoriasis is my first thought, but there are other possibilities. Let a dermatologist take a look, and give you a precise diagnosis and specific treatment.
