Painful hernia: A hernia that becomes 'trapped' or 'incarcerated' can become painful and swollen. It sounds like your umbilical hernia has recently changed from asymptomatic to symptomatic. This means it could be 'trapped' and you should see a doc now to get some treatment. The problem is, an infection can result and the hernia can 'burst' - so please go now to an ER and get some help.
