A member asked:

If most people have been infected with ebv virus why do only a small amount get lymphoma?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Mostly unknown: There is likely a combination of genetic and environmental factors affecting the development of tumors with EBV. Africans get Burkitt lymphoma, Chinese get oro-pharyngeal carcinoma, immuno-suppressed people get other lymphomas. The same issue applies to many other diseases, e.g., only a minority of smokers get lung cancer.
