Multiple risk factor: The patient has every risk factor for stroke other than smoking. The patient also had prior TIA (some people refer to as mini-stroke). While hospitalized, the patient should have an echocardiogram performed and placed on heart monitor to evaluate for atrial fibrillation.

Cause of stroke: Hi. The most likely cause of the stroke does not make it the cause of the stroke; this is a probability argument. The most likely given the risk factors is ischemic due to atherosclerosis; this would also account for the prior TIA. Of course, hemorrhagic stroke due to aneurysm rupture from hypertension or aneurysm rupture secondary to head trauma (MVA) are possible, but probably less likely.
