Careful: I have been a weight lifter for 58 years with no issues until I did what I knew was a wrong lift. Now I have a right Bicep torn head. Do your lifting in a reasonable and safe way. use the belt don't over extend and don't pick the "dead lift" as your favorite. Use a trainer and be honest when interviewing. Yes you can get the hernia again Soooo fore-warned is forearmed.
