A member asked:

What causes gastroesophageal reflux disease (gerd) and how to cure it? what are some common symptoms of gerd?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Esophageal Sphincter: GERD is typically caused by a relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter (a tightening of the esophagus before it reaches the stomach). This allows gastric juices from the stomach to enter into the esophagus. Typical symptoms are heartburn, sour or bitter tastes, nausea after eating, stomach bloating or stomach pain in the upper abdomen.
