Gyn exam: Get a full pelvic exam,PAP. pregnannct test, hormone levels. You will need medication to control cramping and bleeding.

Yes: This is aberrant and unusual for you and if it continues bears examination by a GYN MD. At age 40 menopause may still be a few years away.
