Binding Bile Salts: Questran (cholestyramine) is a bile acid sequestrate that works by binding bile salts and cholesterol preventing their absorption in the GI tract. With decreased cholesterol absorption the liver makes more low density lipoprotein (ldl) receptors, decreasing the number of LDL particles (ldl-p) in the blood. However, Questran (cholestyramine) can cause increased triglyceride (tg) synthesis and higher blood tg levels.
