Scotomas are blind: spots. This becomes important if the blind spot increases in size, and this can be determined best with visual fields screening, as it can point to other causes that may not be known by just dilated fundoscopic exam alone. So, thanks for asking an important question, and glad you got a retinal exam, as your doctor must have given you a diagnosis, and prognosis.
