Yes: You should be protected after the first week. Use some protection like condom the first week to be safer. In the future, I prefer to use the Nuva Ring constantly so there is no gap. You will need to change your ring every 3 weeks. Or you can choose to insert it a day earlier.

Should be fine: instead of 7 days out after 3 weeks in, there are very well studied alternative off label options for use. You can put in a new ring every four weeks without the one week off and withdrawal bleed. Or use 27 day in and 3 days out. the ring has enough hormone for 35 days. Breakthrough bleeding eventually stops and is safe. Remember you do not ovulate or have a "period" on the Pill or ring.
